In such a cruel world that George R.R. Martin created, Samwell Tarly is a character that doesn’t seem to fit in Game of Thrones. Sam is loyal, honest and has a heart of gold. But there is more to him than that. He might just be the most important character in Game of Thrones. There are several facts that link him to be the key for The White Walkers.
Fact 1- Sam reads a lot
Since Game of Thrones season 1 we know that Sam loves reading books, he has read so much about everything, including books that are connected to The White Walkers.
Fact 2- Sam knows how the Walkers are created and what can kill them
In Game of Thrones Season 1 episode 8 one of the corpses that were found beyond the Wall came back to life during the night. The next morning the corpses were burned and Sam gave the information to his brothers of how corpses can be reanimated. When a White Walker touches the corpses they are reanimated and can only be killed by fire. He read it in a book, of course.
Fact 2- Sam survived the White Walkers army
Season 2 finale ends whit the White Walkers army going south to the Wall while Sam is hiding behind a rock. The leader saw Sam but he was left unhurt, as the army marched forward.
Fact 3- Sam survived an attack of a White Walker
Although he survived the army of the White Walkers, Sam was attacked by one of them in Game of Thrones season 3 episode 1. He almost quit running from the Walker when Ghost came to help him. The Walker was set on fire by his fellow brothers from the Watch who found Sam in the wilderness.
Fact 4- Sam discovered the use of dragonglass
Sam and his fellow brothers from The Watch found dragonglass spikes at the Fist of the first men, but they weren’t sure about their purpose. When a White Walker came for Gilly’s baby in Game of Thrones season 3 episode 8, Sam accidently discovered the purpose of the dragonglass. He was the first man who killed a White Walker in Game of Thrones.
Fact 5- Sam was encouraged by Stannis to find a way how to fight the White Walkers
When Stannis met Sam at the Wall in Game of Thrones season 5 episode 5, Sam was reading in the library. They talked about the army of the dead. Sam told Stannis what he saw beyond the Wall and Stannis encouraged Sam to ‘keep reading’. The answer may be hidden in one of those books.
Fact 6- Sam saved Jon’s life
When Jon was preparing to go to Hardhome in Game of Thrones season 5 episode 8, Sam gave him dragonglass spikes in case he sees a White Walker.
Fact 7- Sam arrived in the Citadel and has access to the biggest library
Sam’s love for reading and the death of Maester Aemon was the reason Jon agreed to send him to the Citadel. Sam wanted to become a Maester and he has access now in the biggest library. Will he discover a way how the army of the dead can be defeated?
Game of Thrones season 7 may finally answer this, but we have to sit tight and wait for next summer for the answer.
