Game of thrones review season 2 episode 9- Beware citizens of King’s Landing, Stannis approaches to take the city down and claim the throne. Everyone seems to have prepared and they are trying to get through the night before the battle. Tyrion tries to relax with his whore, Cersei assures herself with a vial of nightshade and the soldiers relax at the brothel.
Even the Hound wishes to relax and he enters Littlefinger’s brothel for some drink. Bronn tries to be hospitable but when the Hound refuses, both men exchange looks with the urge to kill each other. Their attempt is being stopped by the city bell- Stannis is near the city gates.
Everyone prepares for battle. Tyrion rushes from his bed and prepares to lead. Varys warns Tyrion to be careful of Stanni’s priestess with dark magic powers .
In the Great Hall, Tyrion gives instructions to Bronn. The high-born ladies prepare to take shelter and Sansa sees off Joffrey, telling him that she prays for his safe return. Joffrey forces Sansa to kiss his new sword from Valyrian steel.
Cersei, together with Sansa and the other women sit in a room guarded by soldiers outside and Ser Ilyn in the room with the women. She offers Sansa wine and mocks her for praying with the others. Cersei delivers the horrible truth of what will happen if Stannis succeeds- all of them will be raped.
Joffrey and Tyrion argue about the strategy on the battlements. Once they spot Stan`nis’ fleet, the archers get prepared but they wait for the signal. One ship sails in the harbor and when Davos sees it’s leaking wildfire he warns his men. But it’s too late now, Bronn has received the signal from Tyrion and throws an arrow with fire in the sea.
A vast green explosion is seen in the bay and many of Stannis’ ship are affected by fire. However, Stannis decides to continue his fight. Being certain that Tyrion has no more of the wildfire, Stannis orders his men to go on shore and fight until the end.
Cersei and Sansa are talking again when Lancel enters the room to give Cersei update about the battle. Afraid of her son’s future on the battlefield, she orders Lancel to bring Joffrey to shelter. She then finally tell the truth to Sansa about Ser Ilyn’s presence in the room- he is here to make sure Stannis doesn’t find the women alive.
Stannis’ men are already at the gates and they are trying to enter, fighting with some of the king’s men. The Hound is outside the gates, defending the city, but he is terrified by the fire around him.
We already know the story about the huge scar on his face. Feeling dizzy, unable to face the scene, the Hound decides to leave the battlefield. Tyrion practically begs him to return to battle, but he curses the city and the king and decides to leave the city.
The king is also being called by his mother and he accepts the offer to take shelter. Desperate that their king abandoned them, the people have lost interest now for fight, Tyrion comes forward and decides to lead the battle, making strategy to attack Stannis’s army from behind.
Cersei receives reports from Lancel that the men have lost hope because their king is not on the battlefield with them. Cersei knows what her next move will be, but Sansa doesn’t. Shae tells Sansa to get out of the room and to hide in her chambers.
When Sansa enters her room she sees the Hound hiding inside. She is scared of him, but he offers her a way out. He tells her that he will head north and that he can secure safe passage for her to Winterfell. Sadly, she denies and decides to stay hidden in her room.
The success of Tyrion’s strategy results with the men cheering for Tyrion, because he is responsible for taking down Stannis’ army. At the same moment when he exchanges smiles with Ser Mandor, Tyrion is being attacked by him. Pod shots Ser Mandor with a spear, but Tyrion falls to the ground.
Another group of Stannis’ army arrives on shore and now the king’s army is outnumbered. Just before they strike, another group of soldiers come from behind and defeat Stannis’ army.
In the final scene of episode 9 of Game of thrones season 2 we see Cersei getting ready to deliver his son some of the nightshade. The moment she puts the bottle to his lips, her father, Tywin Lannister, enters the room and informs her that they have won the battle. Relieved that she didn’t deliver the vile, she drops the bottle on the ground and it breaks into pieces.
