Game Of Thrones Review Season 1 Episode 2 – Another day at the house of Stark, where we see that the royal family is still here. During the breakfast we learn about Bran’s condition-he will live but he would be cripple.
The idea that the boy will wake up scares the queen but her brother Jaime isn’t concerned at all. Their brother, Tyrion Lannister, also known as the Imp, is very interested in what the boy has to say when he wakes up.
With his statement and secretively sent looks towards his brother we can only guess if he shares his siblings’ secret or not. Later on in this scene the queen visits Catelyn Stark who looks after her unconscious son and Cersei tells the story of the baby she lost to a battle with fever.
Do you remember that Cersei was responsible for Bran’s near death? Well, we can see the irony in this scene when Cat’s thanking the queen who promises to pray for Bran.
Jon Snow, the bastard son of Ned Stark prepares to go to the wall and says goodbye to his siblings. He gives Ayra a sword that was specially made for her as a gift. When he enters the room to say goodbye to Bran he receives harsh looks from Catelyn and we can even feel the hatred in her voice as she asks him to leave the room.
At the same moment Ned enters the room and he is telling Cat to be brave because he doesn’t have a choice and he must go to King’s landing and he also has decided to take Sansa and Ayra with him. “You do have a choice and you’ve made it”. Yes, everyone has a choice, and the choices we make reflect on us and other people.
Game of thrones season 1 episode 2 is about the choices of the Stark family, mainly Ned’s choice to leave with the king and Jon Snow’s choice to leave and become a brother of the Night’s watch. These two choices will reflect on both themselves and on the Stark family.
As soon as the royal family leaves, there is a diversion at house Stark only for an assassin to enter Bran’s room. When Catlyn sees the killer she tries to stop him with her bare hands but it’s Bran’s direwolf that saves him when it suddenly appears in the room and kills the man.
After the attack, Catelyn suspects that the Lannisters are involved in both attempts for Bran’s life. The dagger of the killer was of Valyrian steel and after sharing the information with Ser Rodrik Cassel, Theon Greyjoy, Maester Luwin and Robb, she and Ser Rodrik decide to go to King’s Landing to warn Ned.
During their rest from the road to King’s Landing, Robert and Ned are talking about Daenerys who Robert sees as a threat, telling Ned that he will kill every Targaryen in revenge for Lyanna, Ned’s sister. In episode 1 of Game of thrones season 1 we learned that Robert was in love with Ned’s sister but Rhaegar Targaryen kidnapped her and because of him she is dead.
Meanwhile, Sansa and Joffrey are taking a walk down the river. They meet Ayra with the butcher’s boy playing with sticks, when Joffrey pulls out his sword and decides to show off. Ayra wants to save the boy from Joffrey and hurts him with her stick.
When he threatens Ayra with the sword her direwolf suddenly appears and bites him. In panic, Ayra chases off the direwolf, knowing that it would be killed for biting the prince and she also runs away. Joffrey’s action reveals the nature of his violent character as he hurts the boy without any reason.
After a searching party Ayra is found and brought to the king’s tent. When Ned learns that his daughter was not sent to him at once he shows disagreement with the king’s decision. When Sansa is called to witness the event she stands for Joffrey telling lies about the situation. And this choice will cost her direwolf.
Because Ayra’s direwolf ran away, the queen demands Sansa’s direwolf to be killed instead. We can see that Ned disagrees with this decision and yet he accepts the wish and kills the direwolf himself. From this moment we can clearly see that Cersei doesn’t want Ned to be by the king’s side and that she will do anything that is in her power to eliminate Ned from the picture.
The tragedy lies in Ned’s decision to obey the rules, to keep following the king even though he already sees what’s happening. But still his honor and duty towards the king are bigger than his suspicions and he will continue his journey.
