Game Of Thrones Review Season 1 Episode 3 -The choice has been made and now in episode 3 of Game of thrones season 1 we see Ned’s arrival at King’s Landing who is immediately called to participate on a meeting with the Small Council. On his way to the meeting he sees Jaime Lannister standing by the Iron Throne and they talk about the Mad king, the one who Jamie killed in cold blood and due to that he is now known as The King slayer. In addition, he tells Ned that he had avenged Ned’s father’s and brother’s death with his action, presenting himself as a hero in Ned’s eyes. Still, with the previous events of Game of thrones season 1 episode 2 and with his conversation we can clearly see that Ned doesn’t trust the Lannisters and we can be sure that there will be a lot of disagreements between Ned and them.
At the meeting of the Small Council Ned is shocked to learn that the crown is deeply in debt and wants to cancel the tournament that was planned to honor Ned’s appointment as the Hand. In this meeting we see for the first time the Council’s members: Lord Varys, Master of Whisperers; Lord Renly Baratheon, the king’s brother and lord of Storm’s End; Petyr “Littlefinger” Baelish, Master of Coin; and Grand Maester Pycelle. Ned is addressing them with harsh voice and talking to them with distrust, showing us that he feels that the enemy of the King and the crown are present even in this council.
In the next scene we see the queen’s conversation with her son Joffrey and we can learn from it that the queen shares her despise towards Stark family with her son. Cersei’s statement “Everyone who isn’t us is an enemy” prepares us for the change of events we are about to see in Game of thrones season 1.
Back at Winterfell, we see Bran Stark in his bed, listening to the scary story about the white walkers. This is the first time we listen about these creatures in more details, about what they are, what they did thousands of years ago. When his brother enters the room Bran tells him that he still doesn’t remember how he fell and that he wishes he was dead instead cripple.
At Castle Black, Jon Snow is training with his brothers in black under the direction of Ser Allister Thorne and Snow doesn’t have any problems defeating the others. After the training, three of the young men attack Jon for beating them so badly when Tyrion comes to his rescue. Tyrion tells Jon about the past of the men of the watch, that they weren’t lucky to live in castles and train with noble warriors so Jon has change of mind for them, giving advices the next time they train together and befriending them. When Snow talks to his uncle he asks him to go beyond the wall with the rangers, but Benjen says that Jon needs time to earn this privilege of being a ranger and that he still has a lot to learn about the Night’s Watch.
When Catelyn arrives at King’s Landing she is encountered by the City Watch although she wanted to keep a low profile. One of the guards gives her a message from Lord Petyr “Littlefinger” Baelish and escorts her and Ser Rodrik Cassel to a brothel to meet him. When she and Ned arrive at the brothel they are both furious about the meeting’s location but the information that Baelish provides is very useful: the dragonbone dagger that was used in the attempt of killing Bran belongs to Tyrion Lannister, the Imp. It’s more than obvious in this scene that Littlefinger is still in love with Catelyn and this bothers Ned but she assures Ned that he can trust Littlefinger who also promises to help Ned find the person who is responsible for that.
In the next scene of episode 3 of Game of thrones season 1 we can see Daenerys Targaryen travelling across the plains of Essos with the Dothraki tribe. During the ride she asks them to stop and walk into the grass when her brother Viserys appears and shows anger because she dared to give him command. But before he can strike her, Rakharo, the bodyguard looking for her, whips Viserys neck and takes his horse.
Here is more than obvious that Viserys has lost his power over his sister, we see him weak and powerless in defending himself from Rakharo. Now Daenerys has more power and influence being the queen of the tribe and this will cost Viserys a lot. Later on we learn of Daenerys pregnancy which will make her even more valuable to the tribe.
When Cersei and Jaime talk about Bran’s awakening is more than clear that they are plotting to fight against everybody who stands in their way. Cersei is afraid that Bran will tell their secret but Jaime replies “And if he does, I’ll kill him, Ned Stark, the king, the whole bloody lot of them until you and I are the only people left in this world.” Even Ned is aware that a war is coming. When he sees Ayra training with a sword master he smiles at first but then his smile fades away when he realizes that she might as well be preparing for war.
Ned makes no change to his decision to stay even though he feels uncertain about his safety and the safety for his daughters. Being an honorable man, he wants to discover the truth about John Aryyn and Bran and to bring justice.
Although episode 3 of Game of thrones season 1 doesn’t have a lot of action, many useful information have been provided and the development of the events show a great deal of the connection between the new and the old characters and of the ones who will appear in this Game of thrones season 1. Yes, the White Walkers will come.
