Game Of Thrones Review Season 1 Episode 4 – Bran dreams again of the three eyed raven, who later on in this season will appear more often. The meaning of this raven will be revealed to the public much later in Game of thrones and for now the audience is left with a lot of questions and assumptions about it. When he wakes up, Bran has been taken to the Great Hall by Hodor, a large and simpleminded stable boy. There he meets Tyrion Lannister, who has stopped at Winterfell on his returning from The Wall to King’s Landing.
Tyrion shows sympathy for the boy who is now cripple, presenting an invention of a saddle for Bran to be able to ride a horse again. Tyrion’s directness is very harsh for some people, he speaks the truth without concern for other people’s feelings. We can witness this one again when he speaks with Theon Grayjoy, reminding him of the cruel truth about his presence in the house of the Starks-he was a captor from a war but he was raised as a part of the Stark family. “Your loyalty to your captors is touching,” Tyrion says to Theon.
While practicing in the yard at Castle Black, a new member arrives and Thorne immediately orders a fight with him. Samwell Tarly, a soft and fat lordling from the south falls down unable to defend himself when Jon steps in to stop the beating. During the night, Jon and Sam stand watch on the wall and Sam tells the reason of his arrival. His father told Sam he’s not worthy of the family’s land and title and gave him the choice to either join the Watch or have an “accident” while hunting. The next day Jon tells Grenn and Pyp that they’re not going to hurt Sam, and so no one attacks Sam on the training. Thorne is not happy with this and we can see the start of his hatred towards Snow.
Back at the Dothraki tribe, Viserys is taking a bath with a handmaiden from the pleasure houses. He tells her about the dragons, how they help his family to conquer Westeros. She continues the conversation by revealing very important details which at first may see unimportant, but when you see Game of thrones season 1 for the second time, after you have seen all seasons of Game of thrones you will find this conversation very interesting. The girl speaks about seeing a man with a dagger of dragon glass, a man who can change faces, a pirate who wore gold of his weight and ships with colored ink. Interesting, right?
Even more interesting in this episode 4 of Game of thrones season 1 is when Ned discovers from the grand maester what John Aryyn was asking for the night before he died- a book about “The lineage and history of the great houses of the seven kingdoms”. The last words of John Aryyn were “The seed is stong”. With our knowledge about Cersei and Jaime’s incest we can already guess what these words mean, don’t you agree? Ned is about to learn this truth and it won’t be pleasant for the Lannisters if he reveal their secret. Following the steps of Aryyn’s search of truth, Ned discovers Robert’s bastard son who work as an armor apprentice.
Very interesting change of events can be seen in episode 4 of Game of thrones season 1 when Viserys enters Daenerys’ tent. He shows anger towards her because she dared again to “command” him, reminding her that he is to be the future king and that she needs to respect him. Consumed with anger he strikes her. But now she strikes back at him, presenting to us a whole new Daenerys who is not afraid of her brother anymore by saying “The next time you raise a hand to me will be the last time you have hands”. She has become fearless now, embracing her power and status of being a Khalesee she realizes that her brother will never retake their homeland and accepts the idea that she must do it on her own.
At the Hand’s tournament, Sansa and Ayra attend to watch the tournament along with the king and his court. Ser Gregor Clegane appears for the first time and Liilefinger tells Sansa the story about how the Hound, the brother of Ser Gregor, received the horrible burns on his face. From this story we are given the basic information needed for picturing the violent character of Ser Gregor-the Mountain. Finally, we can see some action in this episode 4 of Game of thrones season 1 with Ser Gregor’s attendance at the tournament and him killing the other knight who fought him.
On her way back to Winterfell, Lady Catelyn Stark stops for rest at the Inn at the Crossroads when she encounters Tyrion Lannister who enters the Inn after her. Knowing the truth about the dragonbone dagger she calls out to the bannermen of her father who are gathered in the room to seize the dwarf. The scene ends with the dwarf being surrounded by swords. Very bald and yet dangerous move for her to take.
